Dave Stangland

Camp Director Dave Stangland is a graduate of North Texas State University (now University of North Texas), and received his Master’s in Education from Portland State University. Dave has been band director at Heatherwood Middle School in Mill Creek since 1991. Bands under Dave’s instruction have established a reputation of excellence, and frequently earn “Superior” ratings at local festivals. Notable achievements include Heatherwood M.S. Advanced Band’s performance at the 2013 NAfME Northwest Conference in Portland, and also receiving the Greg Metcalf Memorial Award for best band in it’s division at the Kiwanis Music Festival in Vancouver B.C. 2015. Dave received an “Outstanding Educator” award in 2005 from the Heatherwood PTA, and has been honored as “Most Inspirational Teacher” by a district Superintendent Scholars Finalist. A number of Dave’s former students have enjoyed participating in All-State Jazz Bands, Concert Bands, and Orchestras.  Several of them are now pursuing careers as professional performers and music educators.

A woodwinds specialist, Dave is a saxophonist with Jazz Police, a contemporary big-band comprised of many of Seattle’s most talented jazz musicians. Dave’s training includes jazz improvisation lessons with saxophone legend Don Lanphere, saxophone lessons with Los Angeles recording artist Dan Higgins, and improvisation/combo classes with Rich Matteson and Dan Haerle at NTSU. As a bassoonist, Dave has been a member of Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island, Thalia Symphony, Everett Symphony, Northwest Chorale, Starry Night Orchestra, and has also performed with Oregon Symphony, Portland Wind Ensemble, and numerous other chamber music and jazz organizations in the northwest.

Mike Mines

Mike Mines is a graduate of Central Washington University and has taught band and jazz band at Valley Middle School in Snohomish since 1985. His concert bands and jazz bands are known for their consistent excellence throughout the Puget Sound region and have won numerous awards including First Place at Bellevue Jazz Festival in 2002 2003, and 2016. Mike has presented clinics on band room management and middle school jazz band repertoire at Washington Music Educators and All Northwest conferences. He has served as clinician/adjudicator at many concert band, solo and ensemble and jazz festivals. Mike served as President of the Mount Pilchuck Music Educators Association (MPMEA) from 2012-2015 and was inducted into the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) “Hall of Fame” in 2014.

In addition to his teaching duties, Mike has performed as a professional trumpet player in the Seattle area for over 30 years. He currently plays lead trumpet with the Jazz Police, is a featured soloist and lead trumpet with the Jim Cutler Jazz Orchestra, and played lead trumpet in Paramount Theatre’s productions of Chorus Line and The Color Purple. Mike also performs frequently with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra and has appeared with such touring artists as Mel Torme, Kay Starr, The Mills Brothers, The Temptations, Dee Daniels, Dave Weckl, Bobby Shew, Ingrid Jensen, Eddie Daniels, Ernestine Anderson, Red Holloway, Pete Christlieb, Dennis Wilson, Jay Leonhart, The Four Freshman, Marlena Shaw and many others. Mike has been with NorthEnd Jazz Camp since its inception and his expertise is invaluable!

Along with consistent jazz instruction by Dave and Mike, NorthEnd Jazz features clinics by some of the NorthWest’s finest professional musicians. Clinicians in the past have included professionals such as Chris Monroe, Dave Pascal, Dan Haeck, Doug Reid (Keilworth), Jake Bergevin, Jon Hamar, Jon Pugh (Conn-Selmer), Steve Ross, Bruce Wilson, Chuck Wiese, Al Smith, Scott Boal, Ken French, Clipper Anderson, Tom Morgan, Neil Proff, Reuel Lubag, Steve Treseler, Randy Ruback, Kelsey Mines, Taryn Zickefoose, and others.
